Explore Costa Rica

This trip is hosted through the Albuquerque Academy Science Department. There is no language requirement. We aim to allow kids to get an experience with field sampling and see real-life examples of the Environmental Science and Agroforestry practices we talk about in class. We will be assessing water quality for the Bri Bri. As well as collecting water samples to evaluate for microplastics back home. We will get a chance to look at the geologic development of the region and better understand the rainforest biome and how it is impacted by industrial practices.

Cultural Immersion

We aim to provide students with the opportunity to gain context for how different life can be in this wonderful world. Students will have the chance to go swimming in the rainforest with children from the tribe, and will have the opportunity to learn about the religious practices of the Bri Bri in their Usure (religious building). We will learn some of the nearly extinct Bri Bri language, and be told about how the Bri Bri view their roles as stewards for the forest. We will eat their food and help them perform some maintenance around the commune in exchange for their hospitality. This service to the Bri Bri can count as community service hours (12-14 hours).

What's LASE?

Lase is Latin American Service Expeditions, they help us to connect with the Bri Bri and to make lodging and travel arrangements. Since the community in Yorkin (Bri Bri Village) is so remote, it is necessary to use a service to ensure accurate lodging and dietary details.
